Roma Sack De Rossi and Appoint Ivan Jurić as New Coach

Roma Football Club announced on Wednesday that it had dismissed its coach and former midfield star, Daniele De Rossi, due to poor results early in the current season, and appointed Croatian Ivan Jurić in his place.

The capital's team failed to secure any victory in four league matches (three draws and a home loss to Empoli 1-2), currently sitting 16th in the standings, just two points above the bottom.

Roma stated on its official website that it "relieved De Rossi of his duties as the first-team coach. The club’s decision is made in the interest of the team to get back on track as quickly as possible while the season is still in its early stages."

The capital team added that Jurić would take over his duties until the end of the season. Jurić, 49, who managed Torino from 2021 to 2024, becomes Roma's third coach since the start of the year, as De Rossi was appointed last January until the end of the season after the dismissal of Portuguese coach José Mourinho. Last June, De Rossi's contract was extended until 2027.

Jurić previously managed Hellas Verona (2019-2021) and Genoa in three separate spells between 2016 and 2018, as well as Crotone (2015-2016) and Mantova (2012-2013). He also worked as an assistant coach at Palermo and Inter.

The decision to part ways with De Rossi, a World Cup winner with Italy in 2006, came after a disappointing 1-1 draw against Genoa on Sunday, which denied him his first victory of the season in the fourth round.

De Rossi, 41, is one of the club’s historic players alongside Francesco Totti, having played as a midfielder for Roma from 2001 to 2019, winning two Coppa Italia titles and the Italian Super Cup in 2007, before ending his career with Argentina’s Boca Juniors in early 2020, where he spent less than a year.

Roma will host Udinese on Sunday in the "Serie A," before facing Spain's Athletic Bilbao in the opening match of their UEFA Europa League campaign next week.
