Swiss national team and Inter Milan goalkeeper Yann Sommer (aged 35) announced on Monday his retirement from international football after a 12-year career with his national team.
In a statement, Sommer said, "After careful consideration, I have decided to end my career as the Swiss national team's goalkeeper. It has been a great honor and privilege to represent my country at the highest level for 12 years over the course of 94 international matches."
Sommer, who kept 35 clean sheets in his 94 appearances, added, "With the conclusion of the European Championships in Germany, where I spent unforgettable years in the Bundesliga, it's time to say goodbye."
Sommer is the most capped goalkeeper in Swiss national team history. His last international match was the penalty shootout elimination in the quarterfinals of the European Championship against England on July 6 in Düsseldorf, according to Agence France-Presse.
Sommer made his international debut on May 30, 2012, at the age of 23, under the guidance of renowned coach Ottmar Hitzfeld, during a match against Romania in Lucerne.
Since Diego Benaglio's retirement after the 2014 World Cup, Sommer became the national team's first-choice goalkeeper after joining Borussia Mönchengladbach following the Brazil World Cup.
