Barcelona, a competitor in the Spanish La Liga, announced on Wednesday that midfielder Marc Bernal will miss most of the current season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his knee.
The 17-year-old Bernal sustained the injury to his left knee during Barcelona's 2-1 victory over Rayo Vallecano on Tuesday and was forced to leave the pitch in the final minutes.
Bernal, who made his debut with the team during Barcelona's win over Valencia in the first round, also suffered an injury to the outer meniscus.
Barcelona stated in a press release: "Bernal will undergo surgery in the coming days."
Barcelona is set to host Valladolid next Saturday in the fourth round of the league.
